About the Program

The Mesa Hometown Heroes Banner Program is a tribute created for the community to honor fallen service members, veterans, and active-duty service members of the United States Armed Forces. We take pride in recognizing and celebrating their dedication to our country. The banners are displayed on streetlamps in Downtown Mesa during the Memorial Day and Veterans Day holidays. This program is offered by the Mesa Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Downtown Mesa Association.

The applicant or the service member must be a Mesa resident or work in Mesa. Banners include the service member’s name, branch of service, and photo (if provided).

Once the banner has been displayed for the two holidays, it will be given to the applicant. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis by the Community Services department.

Mesa Hometown Heroes Banner Program Q&A

Who is eligible to apply?

The applicant or the service member must be a Mesa resident or work in Mesa.

When can I apply for a banner?

The online application form is made available annually in March and will be applicable for that year’s holiday displays during both Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Due to limited spaces, applications are taken in the order they are received.

How much is a banner?

The cost of each banner is a $70 tax-free donation that is made upon acceptance to the program. The applicant will be given the banner once it has been taken down after the second display. Thanks to community donations, limited scholarships are available by request. For scholarship eligibility, please contact us at diversity.info@mesaaz.gov .

How can I pay for the banner?

When applications open, you may make your payment through our online portal which will be made accessible during that time. For other payment options please contact us at diversity.info@mesaaz.gov .

Where will the banner be displayed?

The banners will be displayed along Main Street in Downtown Mesa during the Memorial Day and Veterans Day holidays. All banner locations shall be determined solely by the City of Mesa.

When will the banner be displayed?

Each banner is displayed twice a year for two weeks during the Memorial Day and Veterans Day holidays.

What is on the banner?

Each banner will include the services member’s name, branch of service, and photo. If the applicant does not have a photo, we can use a symbolic ribbon in its place.

What type of photo does the applicant have to provide?

The photo should show the service member in their uniform, preferably with an official flag in the background. The photo needs to be a high resolution 5” x 7” or larger portrait-style photo. Digital photos are preferred in high resolution (600 dpi) and should be sent in JPEG format.

Depending on the quality of the photo, some banners may appear pixelated. The final banner design will be approved by the applicant before printing.

What if the banner is damaged during display?

The City of Mesa is not responsible for replacing banners that are stolen, damaged, or destroyed due to age, vandalism, or any acts of nature including high winds. Any loss or damage to an installed banner will be handled at the discretion of the City of Mesa.
